Alligator with Flowers by A. De Neuville 1852 Framed Poster

$46.41

This was Florida in the early 1850's as French travel writer Achille Poussielgue described it. In his Quatre mois en Florida, mostly illustrated by A. de Neuville, Poussielgue describes everything from battles with birds and bears to famous Natives, and scenes from St. Augustine and surrounding areas. He describes the St. Johns River, settlements on black water creeks, and lakes of the clearest waters studded with all variety of birds. Poussielgue seems to have been some sort of diplomat, which enabled him to make these travels. At one point he was an Embassy attache in Washington DC. We wish we could read more but it's in French and not super accessible!

We were able to learn more about the illustrator A. (Alphonse) de Neuville. De Neuville studied under Delacroix, and not only illustrated Quatre mois en Florida as part of Le Tour du Monde, but also Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and was best known for his scenes of the Franco-Prussian and Crimean Wars.
