Florida Sunrise by Martin Johnson Heade 1890 Framed canvas

$39.72

Martin Johnson Heade, in the middle of his sixth decade, newlywed, and looking for a fresh start in St. Augustine, met Henry Flagler. Flagler was building the Hotel Ponce de León in St. Augustine and commissioned Heade to create two large paintings to hang in the hotel. As part of the construction project Flagler also built a row of artists' studios, one of which Heade occupied for the rest of his life.

Heade began his painting career in New England, sharing studio space and studying with his friend with Frederic Church. Chasing his obsession with hummingbirds, he spent an interlude in Brazil painting the tiny birds. Heade spent the last 11 years of his life painting, birdwatching, gardening, hunting, and fishing in sunny Florida.
