Artist Winslow Homer made his start as an illustrator for Harpers Bazaar Magazine, he also painted in oils producing major studio works, but following the Civil War he turned more and more to watercolor. Homer, from Boston, was an avid fisherman, and was likely originally attracted to Florida out of a desire for solitude and good fishing grounds in temperate weather. He visited first around 1885 and continued to return until 1909 the year before his death.
